What you don't measure, you can't manage

Environmental policy still runs on estimates. IoT and AI are what make it possible to measure emissions instead of guessing them.

That line gets used a lot, but in the context of greenhouse gas emissions it's not a platitude — it's the current state. A lot of environmental policy still runs on estimation. Emissions get calculated from standard emission factors, not measured directly, because the direct-measurement infrastructure isn't there yet — especially for sectors like power generation, which depend heavily on fossil fuels and would need real-time tracking of fuel consumption, combustion efficiency, and output to know their actual footprint.

That's a solvable infrastructure problem, not a policy problem. IoT is what makes continuous, low-effort measurement possible — instrumenting emission sources so the data shows up without someone running a manual survey. Once that data exists reliably, AI and machine learning models start to earn their place: predicting emissions trends, flagging anomalies, and helping companies plan mitigation instead of reacting to an annual report.

The mitigation side matters as much as the measurement side. Once you can see where emissions are actually coming from — not estimated, but measured — you can target root causes instead of applying generic reductions across the board. That's a much more efficient way to hit a net-zero target than treating every source the same.

None of this happens because companies decide to be responsible on their own timeline. Regulation and public policy are what actually accelerate adoption — setting standards, pushing certification, making environmental responsibility something that shows up in how a company operates rather than something it publishes once a year.

The technology here isn't the hard part.

Building the measurement discipline — and the willingness to see the number before you've decided you like it — is.
